To use this NHL 06 configuration, you must select the Keyboard controller... and you'll have to use the keyboard itself to select it or else the gamepad will move over too. After you select the keyboard, it should work well without any interferance from the built-in support.
I'm using the xbox 360 controller with NHL 06, here's a working profile for it.
