Playing Final Fantasy VIII with Xbox 360 Controller – Method can also be used with FFVII
EDIT: I have created a Profile that mimics the PSX controller, including the use of triggers. If you downloaded the old version, please see updated directions below and download the new file.
I was having issues with the default setup using the XB360 Wireless controller analog sticks with Final Fantasy VIII. The dead-zone could not be set and the (slightly wobbly) XB360 control sticks were causing the player/cursor to move even when centered. This method can fix the issue and make choosing the wrong menu options a thing of the past. Tested with 3 new wireless XB360 controllers and set an acceptable dead-zone (30%)
I can also make one for Final Fantasy VII PC if requested.
NOTE: Both thumbsticks and D-Pad can be used for movement.
1) Plug In Dongle/Turn On/Start Controller, Run FF8Config.exe located in the Final Fantasy VIII folder.
2) Click on Input tab.
3) Set ‘Control Type’ to “Controller - Leave Keyboard button settings at Default.
4) Change controller buttons according to pictures below:

OR
You can also change buttons In-Game:
...through the ‘Config Menu’ – When Set to “Customize.
The controls are as follows (in the order listed for all three menus):
B1 (A)
B4 (Y)
B3 (X)
B2 (B)
B5 (LB)
B6 (RB)
B9* (Left Thumbstick Button Press)
B10* (Right Thumbstick Button Press)
B7 – End (BACK)
B8 – Default (START)
*B9 and B10 will not be used- the Left and Right Triggers will control these functions.
5) Download the following PGP Configurations and Enjoy!
